ReaMix: Breaking the Barriers with REAPER
eBook (PDF), 193 Pages
This book does much more than just teaching you how to use basic tools (such as volume, panning, EQ, gates, compressors, delay, reverb, etc.) to get an OK mix. It also guides you through the relationships – some simple, some complex – that exist between the dimensions of sound and the dimensions of space. It gives you the confidence to transform your OK mixes into great mixes. Although not light on theory, it has a practical emphasis, with links to archives containing some 40 or so project files, with step by step examples. These help you put your knowledge into practice. "Wow! So much good stuff - from mindbending advanced techniques to solid sensible advice, this guide should have a positive effect on just about anybody interested in mixing (and especially those using REAPER)!" - Justin Frankel, Cockos Inc, developer of REAPER. Printed B&W, spiral bound

Sep 4, 2015This in an excellent book. In no way it underestimates the reader, but this is actually what I like very much on it. It provides condensed (no nonsense) information and very valuable examples and explanation. Invaluable for people trying to learn mixing, especially in Reaper, which itself is an excellent tool.
Aug 17, 2010I've read other books on mixing, some of which were excellent at presenting this complex topic. As a long-time user of another DAW and a recent convert to Reaper, I was intrigued by the concept of a book that focuses on these concepts while demonstrating exactly how to accomplish things with software that was new to me. My thinking was that, if it's even a mediocre treatment, it's worth it to help me learn familiar concepts in the framework of my new software. Oh wow! Breaking the Barriers delivered much more than I expected. I've worked through most of the book, but am still learning. Even with that, I've gained a better level of understanding for concepts that were already familiar to me. This book is not only a great treatment of these things within Reaper, but it also works for people that have never tried mixing at all, because those topics are treated masterfully. As part of my job I have to absorb a lot of material from technical documents, and have to do a fair amount of... More > technical writing myself. So I recognize good writing presented in a clear and cohesive manner. This book delivers in an outstanding fashion. The author clearly knows his way around the topic and presents the material in expert fashion. I have to admit that I didn't expect such a good treatment of such a complex topic. I was going away for the weekend and had some time to read this book. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to wait for the hard copy to be delivered before leaving. So I bought the downloaded copy to read on my laptop. It was great, but after I got back home and started actually doing the exercises, I realized that hard copy would be best, so I ended up printing some of the exercises. It made me realize that I also wanted the hard copy to make it easier and so I'd have a permanent reference document. So I'm back today to order the hard copy version, too. I'll still keep the soft copy version available for reference on the road or for quick look-ups, and will keep the hard copy close at hand as I delve into the more complex exercises. I see this double purchase as money well spent. The cost of both versions of this book combined is in line with some other general-concept mixing books. In short, this book performs admirably and I consider it well worth the purchase price for either the hard- or soft-copy version - or both!< Less
Jan 8, 2010Very quick download but it'll take ages to go through as it is a goldmine of information. Very highly recommended.
Sep 25, 2009"well-done" There are a lot of books on mixing out there and I've read most (my mixes still suck LOL)...I'd put this in the same league with The Mixing Engineers Handbook, Mixing With Your Mind and The Art of Mixing. I expected it to be good...but I wouldn't hesitate to call ReaMix "essential". The book is well-written and loaded with valuable information...the sections on EQ and dynamic panning alone are worth the price of admission. The downloadable project files also show right away the power of some of these methods.
Jul 29, 2009"OUTSTANDING & INNOVATIVE" Geoff Francis is rightly lauded for his Reaper User Guide (www.lulu.com/content/1295509). In this new offering he gets beyond the “how-to” (although there is plenty of that) to explore the “why-to” the “where-to” and the “how-much-to” of mixing. The techniques advanced here range from the relatively mundane (but extremely important) audio track cleaning up tasks to quite staggering examples of the deployment of Reaper’s unique routing features. Anyone with any level of interest in mixing will find invaluable ideas and techniques, whatever their choice of DAW, but Reaper users will obviously have most to gain. By taking an approach which emphasizes the spatial aspects of mixing ReaMiX lets the reader in on techniques which quite simply take one’s breath away (and not just when cleaning up vox tracks). Many of the practical examples will make readers re-think what is possible with in-the-box DAW mixing. All this is achieved through the author’s... More > absolute mastery of the tools at his disposal (Reaper and FX of course and also audio theory) but also his keen ear and adventurous spirit. In the end it is these last attributes which make ReaMix, alongside the User Guide, an essential purchase for anyone who wants to make the most of their mixes. What is on offer here is an insight into the experience, innovation and fine judgment which all go towards making great mixes.< Less
