Often known as the best nineteenth-century British author, George Eliot (the nom de guerre of Blessed Virgin Ann Evans) created in Middlemarch an enormous panorama of life in a very provincial Midlands city. At the story’s center stands the intellectual and idealistic Dorothea Brooke—a character WHO in some ways resembles Eliot herself.
