Finished reading George's book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I did not grow up in the same area, it brought back many memories of growing up in the 50s and 60s. By reading this beautifully written book (and seeing all those pictures of bygone times), I feel I know George in a very special way. The book creates emotions buried deep inside. Some were really "laugh out loud" moments: like when a portable lab caught fire, flames engulfing the room and George took a fire extinguisher, pulled the pin and tossed it into the room and ran. Also loved reading George's poetry interspersed here and there throughout the book. Good job writing, good job with the pics and the poetry. All in all, a fabulous book. Would recommend anyone who has not read this book yet to do so. It would make a wonderful summer read. Or if you have read it, buy another one for a friend

I had the absolute pleasure to look back in time, through the eyes of Author George Griffin. Griffin takes us on an intimate journey to a small Cape Breton town, and the coal that was it's life's blood. With a lyrical voice, and a gift of vivid imagination, Griffin treats us with gems like "The chalk dryly making lines on the green horizon, dropping trails of wasted chalk to the ledge below." and bolsters our own imagination, to remember the same things from our youth. This story is not just about a house in a coal mining town, but rather an intimate look into the lives of the family who lived there, their trials and their triumphs.

This book brings to mind and heart a community of people whose kindness is palpable and their contact with each other critical to their survival. It gives us a glimpse of what it was like to live and grow up in a former time when men and women made huge sacrifices for the benefit of their kin. Thanks George for sharing your stories with us.
