Pereny's trials as a teacher in a rough school for so many years approaches madness. The patience required to maintain his sanity during this period is clearly strained by his boundless compassion for the children who go to the school. He presents what can only be described as mutation of the human being in the trash compactor that is the ghetto. And what he pulls from this dark recess are diamonds of hope and accomplishment adjacent to the destruction of personal worlds and spiritual ruin. Pereny's skill lies in his raw heart and his dedication to telling it like he sees it. Pereny brings the innate rhythms of his own musicianship to the table. "Once on the mountaintop, ready to tumble" This is a rich and harrowing read.
