As a school teacher and a parent, and now a grandparent, I can tell you that it's hard to keep the attention of kids in this world of visual stimulation. I had doubts about Splinterdorf, but the cover art attracted me to it. This book is, well, different. The protagonist is a girl, if that's what tacwols of the feminine gender are called. Splinterdorf is a mixture of science fiction and fantasy with enough visual and verbiage stimulation to satisfy any child 8 to 12 or so. The characters have human qualities; the situation, though contrived and somewhat predictable, lends itself to life-lessons that appeal to parents and kids alike. The illustrations are amazing; never seen anything like them in a book ... for adults or kids. What is really different about this book is the word puzzles found on every page. Once the "trigger" is figured out, it's easy to make make sense from nonsense and that was a great lesson for my 10- and 12-year-old grandkids. The book is advertised as... More > Vol. 1. I look forward to seeing Vol. 2 and enjoying it with my grandkids just as I did this one.< Less
