How Reality Came to Be, by Georges Hattab, is a love poem from the author to himself, as brutal as it is romantic. Dedicated to 'M', for 'Me', HRCB is a beautifully minimal exposé of the author's own existence, monologued through oblique discussion of themes such as memory, death, perception, morality, and life, among others. Georges' writing is personal and sparing, leaving the reader to re-read and reinterpret as they progress through the deliberately unpopulated pages: a blankness suggesting reflection. Georges, whose use of space is perhaps as elegant as those words and ideas with which he fills it, lets his voice echo through blank pages and conservative phrasing, a voice perishingly curious about the answers he already has in his possession, inviting his readers into the same space. I was nothing short of honoured to recall some of my own poetry adorning the cover and interior, for Georges has given new meaning to my old structures. To say more would distract from a more...
