Historically, interstitial space or interstice has been understood as an empty space, a gap between spaces full of structure or matter. Consequently, any work of art whose basic nature falls between, rather than within the familiar boundaries of accepted genres or media, has been classified somewhat negatively as interstitial. In recent architectural history, interstitial space came to be associated with strategies of the local, the anomaly and spaces in-between. The studio intention was to expand this notion by conceiving interstitial space as absolutely integral to architectonic order and structure, figurally embedded within it, materially differentiated from it and intensely distributed across the fabric of building.
