I must confess myself a fan of Giles' books: there's something about the way the images and poems combine that I find very appealing. The one feeds into the 'meaning 'of the other. In this collection though, there is a third element: extracts from Thomas' own war diary in the months before his death. Giles Watson has taken these fragments and crafted poems around them. The poems are very good - economical, poignant and carefully-crafted. However, for me, the real skill lies in the way that the poems imaginatively explore and illuminate Thomas' diary extracts. A living poet is responding (and replying?) to a poet from the past. Inspiring stuff!
