A voodoo curse haunts a family in the low country of North Carolina. Ben Porter, a psychologically wounded veteran and reluctant hero, returns from the war to find he has a young daughter. Rachel was born to Olive Mills, from whom Ben is estranged. As teenagers, Ben and Olive discovered the mutilated body of Yolinda, a young black girl. Ben’s deformed cousin, Luther, was convicted of the murder. As he was led from the courtroom, Luther threatened to escape from prison and kill Ben and Olive for their involvement in uncovering the crime. True to his word, years later he escapes, kidnaps their daughter and challenges Ben and Olive to rescue her from his deep forest hideout without involving the FBI or police or Rachel will die. When Ben refuses the challenge, he is branded a coward by all, but the intervention of a Merlin-like old Voodoo priestess drives the story to its dramatic conclusion.

Gilmer White's first novel is a page turner filled with characters from the Deep South. It promises "there will be madness, murder, and mayhem" and doesn't disappoint the reader. It starts on a pier in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1930 with a day reminiscent of all those weather shows with the lone reporter drenched while showing us the coming or present hurricane from the shore with breaking waves nearby. A keepsake is accidentally lost but miraculously recovered by a Voodoo priestess looking for shelter. This starts one of many unique relationships that the author draws you into while telling his story of "Mommas", sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, cousins, love, and incest. Around every corner is something that you don't see coming that makes you run to the next turn as the mystery unfolds. This is a short novel (227 pages) that's perfect for vacation, the boring train/plane ride, or your day off instead of the James Patterson, Steve Berry,... More > John Grisham type drawn out thrillers. It culminates in a heart pounding ending that's not for the faint of heart and seems perfect for the big screen. I look forward to Mr. White's next novel and I hope y'all will join me.< Less
