"Environmental affairs - Global issue, local action" This is NOT a course that just rants on against industry – it is a practical management self-help guide for how to improve and work within the industry AND the environment. Positive case studies are utilized to prove the feasibility of a “managed” approach. The author, Glenn Brigaldino, is a seasoned academic with practical experience. As a Social Scientist he works as a Consultant in Development Cooperation and Policy Management for many countries around the world. He doesn’t just talk the talk – he walks it! Mr. Brigaldino likens our environment to a space ship with limited or finite resources. He then explains how we need to understand the policy, the process and the systems point of view to be able to work with, not against each other. Clear, concise objectives are foremost at the start of each lesson, and provide a great checklist – did you really read that section, or just gloss over it? Excellent study guides and... More > links to help the student learn more effectively. The tests after each lesson are fun and informative – and a great way to see if you actually did retain or understand the information. The first lesson deals with defining our interpretation of Environment, and the political and power struggle associated within it. What we’re dealing with is “sustainable development” – which is more than just a concept. It is our understanding of the issues as well as the problems that will help guide us to proper management of our limited resources. Immediate attention is then paid to our most precious resource – water! We then delve into the environment world of air – and learn of a delicate balanced equation that we may have already broken. Of course, the link between the economy and the environment is examined, with some interesting facts and insights. A most enjoyable lesson was on Deserts – not just what we assume – there are actually four categories – and yes, Deserts are not just hot! We do have deserts in the Artic – and the “desertification” is on the rise – where resources are not as handy as your local convenience store. Clever titles for the lessons make this an enjoyable and informative course. This is intended for an educated person - level of language is not your general quick read, as the topic is one of relevance and scientific in its root. Having said that, Mr. Brigaldino makes the information flow – and you don’t even realize you are learning– quite a feat considering the topic! Paym Bergson< Less
