Hanging Out with the Most High God is the story of Billy Lymon, who, in 1974, is a 19-year-old gay, black, suicidal orphan. Before he can get to his foster mother's gun to blow his brains out all over her bathroom for her and his foster family to clean up, he learns about the gruesome death of his mother and his birth which sends him hurtling faster towards the edge. With the help of Lela, his foster mother's holy and sanctified older sister, God catches him before he falls. Lela shows him to God through Jesus. Because it is a miraculous and wonderful experience, Billy wants to learn as much about the higher spiritual things of God as he can; It becomes a welcomed break from the talk of witchcraft he grew up around. One day, Billy learns that God has work for him. After hearing some Christians speak ill of homosexuality, he asks God in prayer, "How can I work for you when I'm gay? And why is gay so wrong when so many people are that way?" God speaks to his heart and says, "Later." Not sure what "Later" means, Billy continues to study with his Aunt Lela, who had told him that God will speak to those whose hearts are open. After receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, Billy hears more clearly from God. With this new experience, his Christian way of living becomes even more fun and much more peaceful. Much better than the drugs and drink he used to enjoy and depend on. But even though he's tried, he can't seem to get away to live on his own. His foster family does not share his belief, and they enjoy telling him so. God eventually tells Billy to go to New York City. With just the small amount of money he has saved, Billy leaves in mid-September 1975, wondering how long his money will last. On the bus to New York, the Lord tells him to leave the city on November 18th and go to Hartford, CT, then to California, but God does not tell him when. In New York, his faith weakens. Prayer with Lela helps him hold out, and he is led to The Church in the Square where he finds work, housing, and good people. What makes him marvel is that God provides lodging for him in a rooming house where most all of the men are gay. He has never been around so many gay men, all at once. Is this the "Later" that God talked about? Will he learn about homosexuality here? God tells him nothing. Billy just does what he thinks is right - trusting God, putting Him first, praying with friends, and enjoying the lovely fall weather in Manhattan as God meets his needs in surprising ways.
