The residents of Firewood Texas think an ex-con from California is their problem until a meth gang moves in. Pardoned ex-con Frank Eckhart can’t hold a job in Firewood, TX, but must care for a disabled mother with a bizarre past. Stuffing the town bully into a trashcan in front of Rockne County courthouse earns him the approval of the black Jordan Baptist Church ladies, who help him open a shade-tree garage. The scorching summer drought of 2009 isn’t all that has Frank sweating. When he hires an attitude-challenged black female technician on parole and a former cell mate who shows up demanding a job, Frank is pitch-forked into an employer’s worst nightmare: a gender and race-based triangle. Tensions between local Hispanics, blacks, and whites ignite into fiery conflict for Frank and his black half-sister when they become targets of a local meth gang.

The dialogues between the local characters are so authentic and peppered with such witty metaphors and innuendos they run a gamut of emotions, from hysterical to intense to solemn. If you like the earthy humor of Janet Evanovich and the witty metaphors of Tom Robbins, you'll really like this one! Quite an eclectic group of characters whose lives manage to intertwine in the most intriguing ways. My only disappointment was that it ended with an unusual incident, but I suppose that's where a sequel will provide the resolution...
