This book inspired me, it is a must read for all educators and those that touch the lives of children. It takes special people to educate children, I saw that in my mother as she educated and touched the lives of special ed children. Now I see it in the spirit of this author, Granville L. Caldwell, he is passionate about his love for Christ, his love for his family and the children that come into contact with him. Purchase this book, read it, love it and take it to heart.

Rarely has a book been so comprehensive in its perspective and yet refreshing in its presentation of old, hard truths. In the Midst of Mess, Caldwell immediately draws the line between teachers and everyone else involved in the dispensation of public "urban" education, and then firmly, unrepentently aligns himself with the educator. From beginning to end, told through poetry, pastiche, essays, e-mails and surveys, Caldwell adopts and maintains an unapologetically myopic perspective on all that afflicts urban education--and he's at Peace with that, too. He details the insane expectations imposed upon classroom teachers while attaching real-time scenarios challenging the typical educator: Bills, family and student deaths, decrease in pay, and egregious evaluations rendered by administrators. Nothing is sacred as Caldwell takes on "ghetto mentality," "urban" names, 28 year-old grand-mothers, parents who attend conferences high and/or drunk,... More > ineffective teachers who become belligerent administrators, and societal effects on today's kids. Creative in its narration, Caldwell shares personal information and insights from his decade in the urban classroom. A must read for current educators and ANYONE considering a career in teaching.< Less
