Petrichor Rising takes you on a journey that exposes you to the full spectrum of emotions, from barely concealed despair to hope, from love to sorrow, with a clear appreciation of nature’s value and humanity’s shortcomings. It rides a roller-coaster that moves you to consider many of life’s challenges from a different perspective, as all good poetry should. Haunting yet shocking, aching nostalgia and enchanting stories about dragons. Optimism and hope tinged with shadows of doubt. Places never seen and humanity’s uncaring nature, prosodic social commentaries and observations of the minutest details of life. Mood, atmosphere and romance. Clever writing that brings you close to the edge of society, still capable of moving you and not pulling any punches. Poetry with a universal appeal covering subjects as varied as the loss of a cat or a harrowing account of the 7/7 London bombings, poetry that focuses on the roots of all that makes us respond to life and long... I learned a new word when I discovered Petrichor Rising. The poetry anthology is comprised of nine poets from around the world who make up the Grass Roots Poetry Group (GRPG). Petrichor is a noun of Greek origin, defined as the pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell. I read the poems before I found out the meaning of the word, and now I cannot think of a more appropriate title. Divided into three parts: The Drought; Gathering Storm; and The Rain, each poem awakened my senses to new and imaginative interpretations of what it’s like to move from drought to rain. The different stylings highlighted the immense talent of this group. The Foreword, written by English poet, John Anstie, set the tone for the book. In his opening sentence, he writes: “Poetry means different things to different people.” It’s for this reason Petrichor Rising is a beautiful and accessible book, as all nine poets have created words not just for an elite group of poets and writers, but for... More > readers and lovers of the written word, no matter your exposure to poetry in the past. I’ve had the great pleasure of discussing poetry with Mr. Anstie, so I knew any project he became a part of would be handled with utmost care. He is, after all, like all the poets in this collection, lovers of the poetic form, not merely as an intellectual exercise, but as a means of conveying their passions. Throughout the book, the voices of the GRPG lull and beckon, seduce and inform. Elements of nature weave in to elements of every day life, transporting us on journeys filled with memorable moments—sometimes moving, sometimes tumultuous. More often than not, they bathe the reader in quiet contemplation. For me, reading poetry is a time to dream a little. Petrichor Rising indulged me in a wonderful dream, and for this, I’m truly grateful to its poets. Pick up this book. You will not be disappointed. Proceeds going to UNICEF make it an even sweeter deal.< Less
