Greg Grieco’s memoir paints us a vivid picture of a boy coming of age in the 1950-60s on the west side of Chicago. The reader is drawn into descriptions of growing up in a dysfunctional family, long before anyone had thought to coin that phrase. We learn about the close-knit Italian family of his father and his mother’s Irish and German roots. I found myself cringing at the descriptions of Greg’s abusive father and could imagine the pain it inflicted on him as a young boy. I found I was thankful when we heard of the wisdom and grace of Greg’s grandfather Canio, an anchor in his childhood. There was incredible detail given to how Greg learned to cope with the pressures in his family and about the changes happening in the neighborhood. I found myself captivated by the incredible attention given to detail of Greg’s formative years.

Canio's Secret is a work which tells the story of a sensitive young boy, a father who was given to volcanic outbursts of temper, and a grandfather, "Canio", who was a refuge of calm and sanity for the boy. The boy's growth from a terrified child hiding from his fathers wrath in a closet, into a rebel who rejected everything he equated with his father, church, country, racism, makes for a good read. The hero of the story is of course the grandfather, Canio, who was a genuine human being. A respected elder in the neighborhood, who charmed his grandchildren with candy, and magic tricks. The real magic of course was love.
