In TREASURE CAVE, Gregg Bogosian has produced an interesting and useful volume: an entertaining original novel set in the tradition of "boys' adventure novels" such as _Huckleberry Finn_ or _Treasure Island_, plus a good deal more. TREASURE CAVE offers us a serious look at childhood in Ohio and Kentucky between the US Civil War and the Great War in Europe, plus a "metafiction" on writing historical fiction, one that brings into question important issues in gender politics and child-rearing. Anyone teaching writing would do well to assign TREASURE CAVE for a walk-through of how an author uses historical materials. Anyone involved in the debates on gender identity — or just bringing up kids in 21st-century America — should read the book.
