I bought Threshold after being recommended it by a friend who reads a lot and is very good at discovering hot new authors and titles. It is a story with an ensemble cast, in a similar manner to Game of Thrones, set in 13th Century England, Wales and France. The first chapter – nay, the first few pages – set the scene expertly and make you immediately invested in reading on, making it a real page-turner. Without going into too much detail at the risk of spoiling a great story, there are mysterious parts of it that remind me of some classic films such as Pulp Fiction. I think the story would translate very well to TV – maybe a network will pick it up in a few years! Figg has a detailed writing style and goes into vivid description of the circumstances surrounding each scene, which made me feel really at home in the story and the plot, but nevertheless the chapters are of a comfortably digestible length so you do not feel weighed down. The book is one of a series in the “Engines of... More > Ascendancy” saga. I got in contact with Figg via Twitter (@gregoryfigg, if you’re interested) and he confirmed that the writing for the second book is progressing nicely – I personally can’t wait for the next book! I read the first edition, but handily the version now available is a re-edited edition, released in August 2016, that amends a handful of typographical errors. I’ll keep my first edition with pride!< Less
