River of Desire

River of Desire inundate two lives – Tong Ying, the 26 year-old journalist of a fashion magazine, and Lim Jin Shen, an unhappily married 38 year-old medical specialist. Against the diverse background of the characters and amidst the class strata and social hierarchy of Singapore – lawyers, doctors, psychotherapists, CEO, PI, the police, nightclub hostesses, lesbian sales manager, the neglected wife of a successful businessman– medical ethics, family violence & moral relativism are explored. The kaleidoscope of characters evokes a central theme – the loneliness of people in a crowded city, and their innermost desires. “There is a river of desires flowing deep down everyone’s heart,” and the novel depicts their frustrated attempts in their desires for love, money, sex, happiness, and above all, freedom from loneliness.
