Marcel Golay (1902-1989) was a Swiss-born mathematician, physicist, and information theorist, who applied mathematics to real-world military and industrial problems. He studied engineering at the EPFZ and received a Ph.D. in physics from the Chicago University in 1931. He joined the US Army, became a Chief Scientist and, during WWII via Lisbon he traveled to Switzerland to bring to the USA German physicists who fled Nazism. His efforts in refining infrared detection got him to develop the Golay Sequences for which the spirit of finding properties with ‘0’s and ‘1’s is used for the Golay Codes used for astronomical images. To find how the human brains codifies information, researchers should know about the Golay Sequences, the Golay Codes, and the game of Go. Opposed to the Viet Nam War, in 1955 Golay left the US Army to join Perkin-Elmer as Senior Research Scientist. This political decision prevented Golay’s earning the Nobel Prize for which he was twice... More > a candidate in 1982 and 1985.< Less
