First of series of Harley Sachs memoirs, this recounts his reluctant US Army service in spite of lifelong asthma. Having drifted through Indiana University a step ahead of the draft during the Korean War, Sachs was drafted and sent to Camp Breckenridge, Ky and a special training unit of misfits like himself. It was called Queer Company, and the subject of his novel by that name. Because he had more or less by default graduated with a German minor, he was assigned to Heidelberg, Germany. There began his own version of the historic Grand Tour. He got an early release to return to Indiana University for a Masters, then took the rest of his GI Bill to Sweden. Other memoirs followed.
