'the deserving poor' describes life within one of the Union Workhouses devised during the early 19th century to meet the needs of large-scale poverty in Britain at that time. The Nottinghamshire town of Retford built just such a premises to deal with the local area paupers and this is an account of it in the years 1836-1930.
