I cannot say enough good things about Helen's book. From the moment I started reading, it brought tears to my eyes. Helen has an amazing way with words and she understands the hell and despair of benzo withdrawal. Each chapter resonated with me so much that it was like each sentence was a hug from a loved one. A loved one who understood. A loved one to validate those of us that are injured by these poisons. One huge takeaway from her book actually changed my life and my outlook on my own grueling taper off of benzos. It was February of this year when I heard loud and clear from the book that we cannot change our circumstances in benzo withdrawal with a magic wand or a time machine.. but instead we can do one thing each day to still LIVE. I wasn't living. I was barely making it day to day and doing basically nothing for self care. My taper and my children's needs were my entire life. I realized how important it was to do one thing each day to feel truly alive. For me, this manifested... More > in the form of art. I started with a rock and put one coat of color on it. Now, 7 months later, I have developed not only a passion for everything art, but it has changed me. I owe all of this truly to Helen's book. The way she explained certain things and talked about coping and finding the beauty in our daily lives even though they seem full of darkness. I can't recommend this book enough.< Less

Profound talent. Helen Clark's "Stepping Toward Freedom" is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone within the realm of benzo withdrawal. She has created such a powerful, sensible, accurate guidebook chuck full of wisdom and insight - I could not put it down once I opened it. She articulates perfectly what this "journey" is like and the way she formatted each chapter ending with bullet points - it is effortless to digest and follow. Helen's work is an essential addition to anyone's toolkit. It is truly a masterpiece. If you are reading this Helen, I can not thank you enough for creating what really amounts to the closest thing to an antidote to the suffering caused by these poisons. Standing Ovation, Helen. <3 <3 <3

Benzodiazepine dependence has become the finally recognized, to some degree, scourge of the last 5 decades that has snuck up on people and so largely those affected have been unsupported by friends, family and scandalously the medical field. These persons iatrogenically harmed have turned to the internet and published works such as this for guidance. Being one of this number, I highly recommend this book as a companion to anyone else going through this experience. Its excellent and extremely helping.

I have not suffered from crippling anxiety or pain, but I have seen clients tossed by prescription opioids into the life-changing hell of withdrawal. Now, I realize, there is another class of prescribed drugs that ruins lives. Helen Clark’s book “Stepping Toward Freedom" pulled back the curtain for me on the dangers of prescribed anxiety medication. Her crisp narrative combines the prose of memoir with engaging insight on self-help. Her journey began with grief over the traumatic death of her sister. She turned to a psychiatrist who instead of therapy offered a drug that deprived her of the ability to function. This 123-page paperback offers a recipe for escape from medically prescribed torture. The memoir backstory gives special resonance to sections that outline ways to overcome despair and emotional pain. I never experienced horror close to the symptoms that can accompany withdrawal from these drugs. Still, I was uplifted by the book’s affirmations and ideas on how to find... More > threads of joy when your mind is in tatters. With everyone on high alert about prescribed Opioids, another pharmaceutical routinely prescribed by doctors is also dangerous. #Benzodiazepines, given to quell #anxiety and #insomnia, are next in line. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show both to be the prescription drugs most often responsible for emergency department visits and #drug-related #deaths. A quick on-line search lays the dangers bare. I plan to keep her book on my bookshelf at work. If I have a client who suffers from withdrawal from prescribed anxiety medicine, this book will be my gift to them. Sylvia V. Long, Maryland attorney< Less
