In the 1880s, there was little hope for a young girl to rise above her lot in life. Believing that this life was for work and all pleasure belonged in the next life, Tillie's father works his children to exhaustion, and beats them as a good parent should. Tillie had never heard a kind word or felt a gentle touch until the day that she fainted in school. When she came to she found herself being held tenderly by the teacher. Tillie decided that she would become a teacher like this woman that was her angel. With encouragement from her teacher and the help of the local doctor, Tillie continues her education in spite of her father's efforts to keep her away from books, reading, wasting time, or anything else that doesn't involve a benefit to him. Catching Tillie reading a novel he beats her so badly that she almost dies. This is a work of fiction but the actions of the people are true to the times and way that they lived.
