"A Unique Insight" Upon viewing Helene's photobook I was struck by how warm and intimately insightful it was. Documenting the Christian confirmation of a group of Swedish teens, especially that of one particular girl called Julia, this book seeks to give a non-biased and non-judgemental look into a world that many have not had the chance to experience. Being an atheist myself I was struck by how these images could portray a sense of religious belief, and show how these beliefs effect the lives of the teenagers represented within the book. However, for me, it was the visual structure that was the strongest feature of this book. Helene has allocated the photos in such a way as to create a very cinematic feel, first introducing the settings and group leaders before going on to explore the experiences of the teenagers and how their relationships develop throughout their confirmations. Looking through this book is like watching a story unfold and this in itself makes the book... More > very visually appealing. On the other hand, there are issues to do with layout. I did find there to be too much white space on each page, thus detracting from the images, and the blank pages that are studded throughout the book seem to have little reasoning behind them. Not only do these blank pages distract the viewer from the concept but i feel they break up the narrative flow of the book, which is quite counter-productive as this was the strongest element. Helene has chosen not to include text within the product, and I can't help but agree with this decision. The viewer is aware of the settings due to the dedication at the beginning, but otherwise has very little information to go by. This helped to create a sense of mystique and at the same time, I feel, really helped keep my focus on the teenagers rather then the act of the confirmation itself. The onlooker is forced to look for visual stimuli to understand the situation and this in itself keeps a viewer interested for much longer. The only text that i would have liked to have seen would have been to do with Julia herself, i found myself very interested in her personal story whilst looking through this book, and often found that the photographs could not answer all the questions I had. Such as what was her relationship with Helene? Why focus on this one girl particularly? What were her views about the confirmation? Small details like this could really have helped develop the human interest angle of this photobook in my opinion. Overall I found this to be a very powerful book, with excellent structuring and visual material. To improve further I feel that a balance needs to be struck between the white space and the images themselves, as this will help emphasise the already strong visual concept.< Less
