What makes this book a great read is that it portrays life aboard a World War II submarine in absolutely realistic terms. It includes moments of sheer terror during surface gun attacks on the enemy and depth charging in shallow water that allows no escape. It also includes the tedium of a routine patrol in which no targets are sighted and the crew must drill, drill, drill to stay sharp. It covers everything in between as well, portraying the life of submarine sailors during the war as it really was. The story is told by a combination of rewriting the patrol logs to make for an interesting and readable story, together with interjected comments by the author providing technical details and explanations as well as personal recollections of the events. It's the ideal combination of the official story and the story behind the story told by a man who was there and saw it all happen. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll also say that I was the book's editor, but I am sure you will agree... More > with me that this is an exciting and fascinating story about a great submarine and her crew. You are sure to enjoy it.< Less
