In this dramatic story of his 20 years in the Submarine Service, Herbert L. "Doc" Starmer describes submarine life in detail from the viewpoint of a Chief Pharmacist Mate. His was a position greatly respected by officers and crew alike as he alone took care of their medical needs under the most difficult of circumstances in battle, on the surface, and beneath the ocean. This is a story of dauntless submariners attacking and under attack and of the man they called "Doc" who tended the injured and wounded and prepared the dead for burial at sea.

This is a fabulous Greatest Generation World War II autobiography that could have been written by only a handful of men. There were plenty of Navy corpsmen during the war, but only a few hundred went into battle in submarines during World War II, and of those, very few, if any, remain living besides Doc Starmer. The book covers the author's life and career from birth through 20 years in the Navy and subsequent retirement. He covers medical and submarine training in detail and describes each war patrol of the USS Cobia and a number of her harrowing sea battles. Even the stories about after the war are fascinating, as we learn how submarines were used to spy on the Russians and Koreans during the Korean War and the Cold War. There are plenty of old fashioned salty sailor stories too, as the author tells a number of funny tales about wild shore leaves between submarine patrols. It's not a book for kids, but it's a fun read for adults and an important contribution to history from a man... More > who lived a rare wartime experience and now tells about it so many years later. If you are interested in submarines and/or Navy corpsmen, you won't want to miss Chief Starmer's book.< Less
