Paul Baumer is the central character of the story. He happens to be a student at a school. His school teacher inspires him through his rhetoric on patriotism to join the German Army shortly after the First World War. The novel portrays the soldiers during and after the war. It describes the mental trauma and changes that the soldiers experience when they come back from the war. Unlike earlier novels that presented war as heroic and glorious, the present novel depicts the atrocities of the war and their effect on the minds of young soldiers.
