In the 1820’s several Indian families came down from South Carolina and settled in the Florida wilds from among the Catawba Nation and from the Cheraw families in Robeson County NC and the nearby Sumter Indian settlements. Surnames such as Scott, Oxendine, Jacobs, Porter, Mayo, Perkins, Goins, Simmons, and other names common in the "racial isolate" communities and found in many eastern tribes are those of the Florida Cheraw as well. The tribe maintains ties to its cousins in the Carolina's the Lumbee Tribe of Cheraw Indians and the Sumter Tribe of Cheraw Indians. This is the legal and social history of the Florida Tribe of Cheraw Indians of the panhandle of the state.
