More than 5 stars! This book is useful - really useful for all of those (including teachers) who care for traumatised children. She explains the developmental stages these children were denied - of permanancy and constancy. Van Gulden was raised in a family of 13,(7 of whom were adopted from ages ranging from 6 months to 17 years), is an adoptive parent and grand parent and psychologist. She combines theory and practical expertise, and makes really useful suggestions of what to do when your child acts out This book includes grids that include your likely emotional reaction - an essential part of understanding what to do. Road tested by adoptive parents for Adoption Scotland.

Amazing how much is packed into this small book. Perfect for adoptive parents . . . those waiting for a referral . . . and those whose children have been home for many years. I recommend this to MANY of the adoptive parents I see as a therapist. Helps answer the question, "Why is my child acting this way?", and give concrete suggestions for responding to difficult situations.
