This book constitutes a series of non-reductive interactions between philosophy, psychoanalysis, literature, cinema and politics. It investigates the ways in which the exploitation of the life-drive and the death-drive takes place within and through contemporary cultural products. It then attempts at a modification of the concepts of life and death drives in such a way as to turn them from forms of knowledge to modes of being and thinking. As such, the life/death drives emerge as the two components of a critical and speculative apparatus sustaining a fragile cont(r)act between immanence and transcendence, as well as between affirmation and negation. It is indeed necessary to fantasize being what one is not, in our case being non-mortal, so as to transmute the dominant order of signification and cease being caught up in the rotary motion of drives. The book culminates in an affirmative recreation of Zizek’s theory of the subject as death-drive in relation to Badiou’s theory of the subject as infinitude in time.
