Bart Wolffe's extraordinarily prodigious poetic oeuvre span many accessible and commonly experienced subjects such as Nature, love, loss, sexuality, magic, friendship and dispossession combining humour and an innately wise voice. His humanitas is evident in all his writings which evoke a benevolent and accepting view of the world. The author has a style which makes you feel as though he is addressing you personally; which is refreshing in the often maddeningly esoteric and obtuse world of contemporary poetry. The poems are designed to work well spoken aloud and certainly do so as they are well metred with considered syntax and wonderful imagery. Growls and Utterances also has visionary moments such as the poem entitled ' In the Estuary'; 'Here crusted molluscs cling with mouths/ That bleat voiceless open, shut, to the moon's gift/ Of water ascending, declining, day and night...' The rich vocabulary of the poem echoes the lush verdant landscape of the primal swamp. metaphor for both the... More > process of writing and of our own evolution both personal and as a species. In fact, Wolffe is always aware of both origin in terms of the idea of habitation which is often compared to the place of creative origination. Anecdotal trails from conversation are often added creating a contemporary and conversational feel to the work. In 'Pub Regulars', the collective gathering is seen as a ritualistic gathering of community; 'A piece of idle gossip to pass the time/ "Nine toilets rolls a week!" she said/ "Can you believe it? We use one!" ' There is also a strongly romantic flavour as Wolffe explores his loves and almost- loves, the missed opportunities in casual encounters and conversations. In 'Listen, Damn you' the poet exhorts his muse to ' Abandon all you have learnt/ About being in charge of your life/ You are accidental as love'. Throughout the poet's work a strong sense of immanence of the landscape pervades and the idea that Nature itself has all the clues to the puzzle of existence. In 'Union' Nature removes the separation between one person and another so that conjoinment becomes a confluence of love. This is work with a giant sweep across continents and human experience; each gem like poem is rich in meaning and metaphor and the beautiful rhythm and use of language appeals to the senses on every level.< Less
