A great follow up to her first book, El Hermano. A well crafted period story about a young woman who unwittingly accepts a gift that has some serious strings attached. Three dimensional (and some four dimensional too) realistic characters intertwined with traditional Hispanic lore. A good read on so many levels!

Carmen Baca's characters are authentic--they act and react to their world in ways that ordinary people do, whether they are ghosts or mortals. Rosita has been given the gift (or curse) of foresight by la Llorona, an apparition with her own agenda. Rosita has to discover on her own how to manage her new ability. Fortunately for Rosita, Santa Muerte and la Lunatica know the situation, as well as their own and la Llorona's limitations. There are laws that govern the world that Carmen Baca presents, and those laws are not suspended for surprise twists of plot. The suspense progresses, and the reader finds that true terror is a state of mind, not a jack-in-the-box prank.

I have been hooked on the stories/books written by this wonderfully talented author for more than a year. She not only takes you to places you may not have been, she is able to draw you into the story so deeply you feel like you are part of the characters she writes about. She leaves me wanting More!

Authentic & Enchanting! After writing my own story about the encounters in my childhood seeking to find the truth if la Llorona existed in disguise in a nearby gully and would put you in a trance if you stared too long, this eerie story gives life and words to the supernatural female spirits and what could happen with an encounter. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the kind of spells la Llorona could be capable of imposing on the character Rosita and the others she mentioned. The author's imagination with the other two mysterious women was also enchanting. The writing in New Mexico style lingo is very authentic and memorable.
