Full disclaimer: I know Chris well via academic work. I bought the book not only for this reason, but also because I have an interest in how self-publishing works as an industry. Buying the book from Lulu was quick and easy, and the service was fine. I will ask Chris about his experience publishing with Lulu on another occasion. About Hijiacking Japan (Clean Version): I found the first 150 pages a little slow, but once the hijacking got underway I was turning pages quickly and finished off the remaining 300 pages in 3 sittings. The level of realism is excellent in terms of technical train details relevant to the plot, the believability of the characters/scenario, and the little observations about life in Japan. This was helped by the real time format (reading continues at about the same pace as the plot develops), which worked well once the action got going. I chose the clean version because as a general principle I think it is easier to see the qualities of story-telling,... More > characterization and setting when I am not being distracted by gratuitous sex, violence and bad language. The plot did not require 15-rated material, so to be honest I think these could get in the way a bit in the standard version. Definitely glad I went for the clean version. But, if a good novel is about a little bit of escapism and immersing oneself in another world for a few hours, Hijacking Japan was definitely a good choice for my summer holiday read this year. For the most part I was just absorbed and keen to know what was coming next. Many action novels/films on a similar topic that I have read/watched follow quite a standard, cliched pattern. Whereas Chris tipped his hat to some favorite genres (I just knew there would be a Bond reference in there!), ultimately I liked the fact that he did it his way ... and I had no idea what the ending would be until it came. I think this is what I liked most: I felt I had read the story Chris wanted to write, not the story a publisher had told him to write in order to make money.< Less
