This is a wonderful volume of early songs by Claud Debussy written for his mistress, Madame Vasnier. The three songs are published here for the first time and two are real gems. .Mme Vasnier must have been an accomplished singer because these songs really showcase a coloratura soprano's abilities. La fille aux cheveux de lin, a beautiful song about a Scottish girl with flaxen hair and cherry lips sitting in the clover, is particularly fascinating because Debussy re-used the title 20 years later in his piano preludes. Rondel Chinoise is a bravura piece requiring a soprano with a top C and a bottom A. Caprice is a charming song about unrequited love. The volume also contains a comprehensive essay by the editor together with lists of his editorial corrections and a sample of Debussy's manuscript. All the songs are clearly typeset and the editorial additions appear to have been clearly marked. Altogether a first class volume and a valuable addition to the Soprano repertoire.
