All she knows is that that she feels connected to a child, Gabriel, who is bound to her through a remarkable gift. On the other side of the world, Mikael wakes up alone, his mind lost as well. Yet another wayward spirit, Tennyson, has woken up every morning for over a decade feeling alien in his own body. They all feel like they do not belong, their skins a prison. This book is a good read that makes some interesting observations about the complexity of family relationships. I liked the subtle mystery interwoven through the book and that it was not what it seemed at first. When the fantasy element kicked in, I thoroughly enjoyed the world created by this author. My only gripe is that it was over too quickly. I was interested in learning more about the back story of the main characters so I was glad to read on the author's website that a prequel is going to be released soon. Can't wait!

It was a novel I simply could not put down, reading it cover to cover in a single weekend. Intriguing from the start, one of the best aspects of the novel was a beginning that introduced a fascinating mystery as the premise of the book. It was a delight to discover the fantasy elements unfold as the mystery itself did. The author has created a richness in combining two genres that make for compelling reading. Another aspect I really enjoyed about the book was that I could read it in a single weekend and did not have to commit weeks of my time to a story that never ends, which fortunately is a trend in epic fantasy fiction that this author has chosen to avoid. The innovation here is embracing the idea that a great story can be told with brevity. The best classic literature in every genre is defined among novellas and shorter novels and it is clear that this author has been inspired by such literature. The characters are beautifully drawn and their journey, especially that belonging to... More > Gabriel, is captivating. The author's webpage ( suggests that a prequel and a sequel are currently being drafted and will be released late in 2012. I cannot wait to read them both to find out more about the past and the future of this particular story.< Less
