Oct 26, 2016An inspiring tome! As a musician myself, thanks to the insightful interviews in this tremendous book, I feel even more connected to the ubiquitous muse that connects us in creativity and emotion. I learned in its pages that Jon Anderson's earliest recollections of music were listening to Elgar's Enigma Variations. As a child I would pretend conduct to my father's classical record collection and this too was in my "playlist." I discovered that Jordan Rudess was inspired to be a rock musician by ELP's Tarkus album in which he heard the amazing timbral possibilities that synthesizers could provide; it was another feeling of synchronicity when I read about his feelings for Tarkus as it inspired me in the same way. Like many people (such as Jack Foster III) interviewed in the book that are around my age, the sounds of Big Bands reverberated in our households; Jerry Gaskill (of King's X) and his fondness for The Ventures resonated with me. Even artists whose influences may differ... More > from my own, I could still appreciate and understand the common musical gestalt that bonds the musically creative among us. Because this book has been a literary epiphany in terms of the discovery of similitude of musical experience. And quite a range of artists Mr. Hill has interviewed; from proggers Steve Hackett, Rick Wakeman, Tony Levin, Billy Sherwood, Dave Meros and Erik Norlander to fusion virtuoso Jeff Berlin to Zappa alumnus Mike Keneally to legendary songwriter Tommy James to James Lowe (The Electric Prunes) to Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick founding member) to folk/prog muse Annie Haslam to ... the list goes on and on! Kudos!!!!< Less
Sep 29, 2016Gary Hill’s latest book takes a look at music from the artist’s point of view and delves into why they chose music as their livelihood. Along with that, we also discover the “fan” inside these musicians and we see that although many have been in the business for decades, their passion for music is still as strong as it was when they were first starting out. Many of the people in this book are new to me but not having any background knowledge did not take away from enjoying each chapter. Instead, it made me go research their music and I wanted to see if I could make out any of the influences they stated in their answers. With over 80 musicians interviewed, and many different genres, there is something for everyone. Highly recommended.
