From 1947 until 1994, the Navy ran an officer training and commissioning program at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. Outside the main academic building hung a wood sign with gold metal lettering. It read: "Through These Doors Walk The Future Of Naval Aviation" Between the covers of this book, A Marine Corps Drill Instructor presents a collection of stories, memories and recollections provided by now seasoned, U.S. Navy Officers. 240 stories are told with the same raw intensity as experienced decades earlier when the candidates were but young men and women trying to get past their Marine Drill Instructor to earn a commission that awaited them at the finish line. The insults, threats and even rare moments of enthusiastic support are all here. You won't find examples of political correctness, generalizations or pulling punches in this book, or any coddling of the candidates; future naval aviators were prepared here, it was the most intense officer candidate... Dec 10, 2015From the book’s title to the cover art and content of the book itself, I was immediately impressed with Crouch’s book! It grabbed my attention and held it relentlessly until I finished reading it. While the author is not himself a Naval Officer, he is a subject matter expert in this area, he expertly served as a DI (even better!) at Navy Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida in the mid-1990s. This book has been published in order to chronicle the history of the U.S. Navy’s Aviation Officer Candidate School program over five decades. First Sergeant Crouch introduces the reader to the world of the Aviation Officer Candidate School; a world that demanded the ultimate in training, stamina, perseverance, and teamwork. He honestly, articulately and powerfully describes the unique role of the Marine Corps Drill Instructor in the ever-important initial grueling and high-paced training of some of the Navy’s most trusted and successful leaders. He pens an eloquent collection of... More > memoirs, short stories, and anecdotes from the perspective of both drill instructor and officer candidate. It is relevant, necessary, and right on time. This is the perfect book to give someone who has an interest in military history, or someone who has been through the AOCS/ OCS program as well as someone who played a role in this program in any capacity. I also believe this book would be particularly useful in teaching some facets of the Navy’s core values of “Honor, Courage, and Commitment” to a young man or woman who may be considering military service or is already serving in the military, and it’s an equally excellent book for anyone else who’s wondered about some of the Navy and Marine Corps’ finest leaders and the service they have given to our nation. Thank you for taking the time put this together and doing it right! Semper Fidelis! Yut!< Less
