In the deserts of what is now Uzbekistan, oasis towns grew along the trade route connecting the Middle East to China. Three of these towns are depicted here: Samarkand (Samarqand), Bukhara (Buxoro) and Khiva (Xiva). Samarkand was Tamerlane’s (Timur’s) capital city, and the splendor he began still remains. Mukhammad Al-Khorazmi, the mathematician credited with the invention (discovery?) of algebra, lived in Khiva. This calendar depicts some of the art and architecture of this historic region.
