Being from the south side of Chicago I fell immediately in love with the cussing in this soul bearing book. Marlo even used one cuss word that I had never heard before. I went from feeling pity to outrage to compassion as I read about the insanity of staying in a facility such as she did. I am reading this gem of a book leisurely as it's one of those books that I don't want to end. I'm reading it as a daily meditation book; just a few pages a day because I am using it as a means of motivating myself to transcend my puny little ego, which wants to run the show each day, and face my challenges with the courage and integrity that are the foundation of this beautiful work of art. "Up from the pavement" is a powerful read about forgiveness, resilience, dignity and love. I am consistently humbled by Marlo's attitude towards life in general, but especially by this part of her journey in particular. This book makes me want to be a better person for as long as I have in this human... More > suit of mine. I couldn't wait to purchase this book and now I take delight in digesting it's many lessons on a daily basis. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more about their own humanity to read it as well. You won't only be grateful that you did, you'll want to share the wealth of wisdom of it's pages with all of your loved ones. Thank you Marlo for this artful gift to our community of fellow pilgrims. You are one of my important teachers in life.< Less

At the end of July 2008, I was helping teachers prepare for the new school year when I got a phone call that no parent ever wants to receive. This book is my daughter's amazingly candid recounting of that event and all the months that followed. Although I was there as much as possible throughout her recovery, I wasn't there as she lay on the pavement. I wasn't there as she endured all the medical procedures. I wasn't there as she coped with the loss of her privacy. Reading this book puts you right into every situation and despite the horrific nature of it, will not allow you to sink into despair. Marlo's sense of humor will let you accompany her on this journey while laughing yourself silly. Interspersed between the tale of her recovery is another story. It is the love story of a little girl for her daddy; A story cut tragically short with as much humor and pain as the accident. And although I was there as much as possible for that relationship, I wasn't there for all of it. There... More > were stories I hadn't heard from a viewpoint only a daughter could have of her father whose persona was larger than life. It is a wonderful remembrance. The language is real and gritty. The language is necessary to the telling of the stories and also hilarious. You will not be able to put the book down. Someone tell Oprah to get her book club going again with this!< Less

Just finished your book last night. Couldn't put it down once I picked it up. I think I alternated between trying not to cry and laughing my ass off 90% of the time. Great story, and great job. :)
