The Ranch—A story of the predictable but completely unexpected
Paperback, 102 Pages

Describes life on any Rancho in Mexico in the early 70's, situations familiar as well as amusing. Like Water for Chocolate, these twelve short stories of love unfold in the Mexican desert. As a young woman I was introduced to one particular family when I spoke no Spanish and they spoke no English. Young readers will find this bi-cultural adventure packed with anthropological moments that come to life. Whether getting water or getting married humans change little from one generation to the next. The love of beauty, awe, and surprise is never out of date and always worth remembering. The stories are written and formatted side by side for ease to learn Spanish or learn English. The translations are unique as a testament and educational. I have told these crazy stories at parties and to strangers for forty years. The stories are meant to cross cultures and bring joy to anyone who is learning to bridge two worlds through the language of communication from Spanish into English.

Jan 21, 2020I LOVE this book! These stories are witty, fun to read and educate the reader about the culture and way of life on a rancho in Mexico in the early 70's. This book will be a real find to anyone who is learning to speak either spanish or english as it is presented in both languages. What a delightful, heartfelt read!
Jan 21, 2020A LOVE story in 2 languages -- An adventurous young woman artist found a whole new expression of life, culture, traditions and l o v e. Her fearlessness to travel alone to a country where she did not even speak the language brought her a whole new perspective on family, new friendships, community and life style that few of us experience, particularly Americans from the United States. Not only is each chapter an engaging episode, but each one appears in both English and Spanish, making this book lots of fun and a learning exercise for the intermediate to advanced student of either English or Spanish. The stories stand alone even if the reader prefers to immerse in only one of the languages. I found each episode endearing, as the author encountered very different cultural norms from what she grew up knowing. This is a story that touches the heart.
