A rather thorough journey through the normally inaccessible halls of a tight community doing their best to posture as the only proper example of how the true church is to "gather". Do not expect to get through this book in one sitting. Both the flavor and flow of the writer adapt to the subject matter as it unfolds. Mike also provides actual histories of events and people... some of which should make the subjects of his stories hide under their pillows. Of particular interest to me is the section where Mike begins to explain the Gospel as he has come to see it. It is refreshingly plain and not taken from any churchy formulas or fundamentalist dictums. It is his own experience and insight. It seems that he did not intend to spell it out, but in the course of writing, it came out naturally. This is a rare treat. In summary, i am left with two strong impressions from this book. The first is what happens to a sincere group of Christians when they are falsely empowered to think... More > that they are 'special'. It seems that, as happens so often, they begin to 'play church' with devastating consequences. The second impression i take from this book is: What happens to a sincere child growing up in such a church. Mike's story shows that he was clearly doing his best to honor and respect the church, and his eventual excommunication did not change that. This book is valuable for the distinction of what still can be respected in such a system, and what must, for the sake of all of us, be relegated to the incinerator.< Less

This book is heartfelt testimony from a man who very seriously considered many things we so often overlook in our own faith. It's sincere, and I think it's fair. The book includes anecdotes from other people, some of which going as far to disagree with the author, and I think that builds the book's overall legitimacy. Extending further than his testimony, Moore discusses his current relationship with God as a contrast to growing up, and how he was shaped into the man he is today. If you want to hear about how well/badly a strict Christian upbringing can go, do yourself a favour and buy this book.
