Volume IIB completes the Wehrmacht, and the German mobilisation and war-economy, in 1941. It includes the most detailed Orders of Battle ever published on the German Army (Heer), Luftwaffe and Waffen SS (across the whole Reich) in June-July 1941. Even the smallest and most obscure ground and air units are included, while the Luftwaffe OOBs include details on aircraft types and strengths. Also scrutinised are: the personnel and equipment assigned to combat-units in each army or reserve-force in all areas of the Reich; the ground and air unit reinforcements as well as those newly mobilised; the military personnel and equipment that became available in the Reich during 1941; the Replacement Army; the mobilisation process and resources used; the available replacements and those sent east; the logistical supply of the Wehrmacht (the varying Supply Distribution Efficiency); the Kriegsmarine forces in the east; and the Wehrmacht killed, wounded, missing/POW, unfit and recuperated casualties.

May 6, 2018Volume IIB completes the outstanding analysis of the Wehrmacht and German 1941 war-economy started in Volume IIA. This volume includes a full analysis of the all the Luftwaffe forces deployed across all areas of Europe, as well as the Kriegsmarine forces involved in Operation Barbarossa. It also includes complete sections on the German replacements, logistics (under the umbrella title Supply Distribution Efficiency), war production of all the key weapon types, mobilisation in terms of manpower recruitment and availability, and the Replacement Army. This series remains, in my opinion, the definitive work available on Operation Barbarossa, and a must have for all those with a deep interested in the East Front during WWII.
May 1, 2018The second volume covering the German forces and war effort in 1941) is another incredibly detailed volume in this series on Operation Barbarossa. The author has, literally, crammed a huge amount of amazing detail into these books. The OOBs (orders of battle) are by far the most comprehensive and detailed I have ever seen in regards to any study of any campaign during WWII. All the ground, air and naval forces are included. In addition, there is a huge amount of information presented on almost all the other aspects of the war in Russia during this period. These include aspects such as the availability of weapons and personnel, war production, replacements, supply and logistics, transport and casualties (to name a few). However, the author goes a step further than just presenting data: in many cases the chapters include analyses (coupled with a lot of insight) into why the Germans made certain strategic and operational decisions, and if or/and why they were probably mistakes. In the... More > process a lot of the assumptions and associated falsehoods surrounding Operation Barbarossa are questioned, and in some cases they do not stand up to close scrutiny. The author also includes very extensive footnote citations throughout the work, with around six hundred of them in this volume alone! An extensive bibliography of unpublished and published sources is also provided. All in all, an outstanding work with few (if any) equals, and well worth the price tag. Anyone who wants to be taken seriously, as an informed person on the Eastern Front in WWII, will have to get a copy of these books.< Less
