Oct 12, 2015I met the author Spyk on the day I purchased his book so had the benefit of a little glimpse into his personality and his reasons for putting his life on paper before I read A Naughty Thing Called Life. Spyk has written his book as he would talk his story in a one-to-one conversation, which is exactly as he wants it. He pulls no punches and lays bare his victories, successes, failures, and some very monumental mess-ups. He attained most of his dreams without too much effort, a natural over-achiever and talented, flawed man who lived his fast life on the edge assisted by copious amounts of chemical substances which he abused in excess. His lifestyle and indulgences proved a near fatal combination and it is testimony to his determination, strength, endurance and never-give-up attitude that he has overcome and fought back to some semblance of health and a miraculous chance at parenthood. It is also a sad story of huge success and huge loss, with a very clear message that substance abuse... More > and it's consequences have imposed a very heavy price on Spyk's life, a price he pays each and every day. That it could have benefited from a little editing, timeline tightening and spell checking ? probably. Would it have made the story more enjoyable for me ? I don't think so. It takes a certain kind of brave to self-edit and author your life story, exposing and laying bare your good, bad and indifferent. Spyk does not shrink from telling it like it is in the hope it may deter others from taking the same path and his constantly repeated mantra 'if it makes a difference to just one person, it has been worth it' has the ring of sincerity for me. That Spyk never names those that indulged and partook in his dark deeds and times, and that he names and gives full credit to those that inspired, assisted and mentored him, speaks volumes for his character. In order to write this review I consulted my trusty Professor Google on Spyk Edouard Gheur and have found this book, his achievements and the events described to be factually based and true. I really hope you are successful in your endeavours to get the documentary film made, Spyk, and my wish for you is strength, health, happiness and success.< Less
