An interesting set of short historical fiction stories focusing more on characters than any 'what if' alternate scenarios. A good job fitting some unusual characters into familiar (at least for us older folk) locations. Definitely recommend.

I find this novel quite entertaining, involving as it does my favorite mythical species in a historical setting. The details are quite well done, considering the real-world difficulties that a centaur might face, in peace as well as war. There are some passages, though, that could use improvement: the first chapter seems a bit 'detached', consisting of much exposition, and might do with a little more immediacy to engage the reader (I think of the writers' dictum, "Show, don't tell"). Perhaps, as well, the Scriptural references might be toned down a bit: they do well as epigraphs, but tend to slow down the progress of the story. The final chapter is emotionally engaging, but puzzling. Who is Liz? How did she become a centaur? Why does she have this psychic connection with Leo? If she was given a backstory that would explain this (perhaps foreshadowed in the body of the narrative), it would help to tie the chapter in more satisfactorily. I hope this critique has been helpful.

I will start this by saying the author is a close friend of mine. That said, I can say that I do not enjoy reading very much. I tend to have ADD when it comes to the printed page. Also, I'm not a huge fan of war history. So I bought the book, mostly because of my aforementioned friendship, but also because of curiosity. I was not disappointed by my choice. Rice's work kept me enthralled. The personalities, the realism in a 'what if centaurs fought in the world wars' fantasy made for an excellent page turner. I advise you to keep on strong till the near end with Lewis and Davis - there is a story within the story that had me in stitches, and one I won't reveal here. I can't give it five stars because some of the enormous details were lost on someone who does not follow war history, such as myself. That said, I would definitely suggest this to anyone who loves to read about mythical beasts in eras of our history I wish *WAS* mythical.
