In this book, I have attempted to uncover and describe the intricate connections between three branches of our founding forebears. Wheras often family lineages transcend along the male side of the family, I have purposely included the female side in order to afford everyone his or her rightful place in the history that has made us who and what we are today. It became a long and interesting search, made more difficult with one branch having split off and moved to the USA. Then, when our immediate family resettled in Canada, it became ever more important that our history, formed on two different continents, was recorded for the benefit of all descendants born in this country to gain an understanding, as to where we came from, how we lived, and fared in the new land.

I enjoyed the book very much. Impressive research Hugh. There's something re-assuring about knowing about your ancestors, a gift that will be cherished by many in our family. I can't even imagine how much time and effort it must have taken to complete such a detailed account of our family history. I learned a lot and enjoyed reading about our family in the U.S. Sister Rose Paul, later known as Christine visited with our parents in Lambeth and many letters were exchanged between our mother and her. My sincere thanks Hugh for the book, the many photographs and personal stories about our family. A job well done.
Hugh Timmerman's dedication and years of determination to complete this family history and genealogy have paid off for all of us who are relatives. He has retrieved and reported on the lives of relatives we did not know, but can "visit" and appreciate through his historical records and narratives of our family. I now have the completed story of my family, from its origins in the Netherlands to the present, to read, reread, and pass on to my children and generations to come. A treasure that would not exist but for Hugh Timmerman. I especially enjoy his narratives of the life and times of our early relatives, and their accomplishments in spite of great hardships. It is obvious that their faith, strength and determination were inherited by Hugh. I was pleased to be reunited with him through phone calls and emails, when he requested help to retrieve records and photographs of the American Verbugts, and to personally visit him and his wife, Helen, in Ontario in 2011 with my... More > sister and our husbands. In addition to the records and narratives in this book, Hugh has included many pictures of the families, copies of personal letters and historical documents that most likely would have been lost over time. Thank you & a huge hug, Hugh, for this gift to your families! NOTE: I also purchased Hugh's previous book, Bombers in the Night Sky, which is a descriptive story of his life as a young boy during the war in the Netherlands & his emigration to Canada.< Less
As a Timmermans myself I'm absolutely thrilled with this book. It's obvious that a great deal of research went into gathering the data to trace the family's origins so far back. I share an interest in my family history so the information presented in this book is wonderful and will be cherished and shared with my children. Though the family lineage is great, my favourite parts are personal stories of my grand-parents, aunts, uncles, my own parents and the personal anecdotes by the author throughout. I especially liked the "Grandfather's Letters" chapter as it really gave a good indication of the volume of people emigrating from the Netherlands in the 50's. Hubert Timmermans, thanks for a great book and for all the other wonderful things you do.
CONGRATULATIONS! Your family history is truly a tour de force. What a treasure, especially for the younger members of your extended family who would never be able to access the details of your experience. Even if they chose to replicate your research, they wouldn't have the full story. I really enjoyed reading it...learned a lot...and particularly your own story since coming to Canada. I didn't know you are a genealogist and now have a much greater appreciation of what's involved. For someone operating in your second language it is extremely well written and it is just a beautiful book. You can be proud of your personal history and the job you have done to preserve it for future generations. Thank you for sharing it with us.
