"Illustration & Sci Fi Short Stories" This book is unusual in that it has a rich mixture of illustrations, stories and jokes. For the illustrations alone the absurdly low download price is worth it. The printed version is a joy to thumb through for the same reason. So, staying with the illustrations for the time being: they range from abstract graphics to political cartoons. The level of draftsmanship is uniformly excellent. And with 70 pages devoted to illustrations, this could have stood alone as a work of great graphic interest. Take for instance “Death is a Frenchman” on page 134. The economy of line and humorous content testify to Deasy’s experience in the field of cartoons. And indeed there are several finely penned cartoon strips, from the short political strips on Reagan and Gromyko to the longer fantasy epics. My personal favorites are the more mystical, elegant drawings, some of an oriental, whimsical or loose-Escher-style character. As if the drawings were... More > not enough, there is also a selection of stories. Some of the stories are pure sci-fi / fantasy of the old space opera variety, while others are more philosophically oriented. Of the former sort, I particularly liked ‘Voyage of Discovery’, which could have been expanded to novel length. The range of characters and action is bold in its epic sweep and the twist at the end rather amusing. The same could be said of "The Abyssal Depths", which is one of those which ended somewhat abruptly. Of the more philosophical offerings, ‘Pruning Time’ appealed to me most: a time travel story with a somewhat provocative scope. Finally, the ‘Joke Story’ is just a string of one-liners – some quite funny, though maybe not to everyone’s taste. So the book certainly has variety. For less than 10 dollars it’s a witty little volume and the even cheaper download price is a real bargain, if only for those graphics. So, all in all, this is a nice little book and I would recommend it not only to Sci-fi / fantasy fans but to a wider audience.< Less
