    Absolutely superb. The writing is entertaining, eloquent, humourous and self-deprecating. I could not put this book down and still feel a warm glow when I think about reading it. One of the best aircrew memoirs I have read.

    This book gives a most readable insight into the day to day life of a pilot and his companions, yet the style enables the mundane to gain perspective. The reader is carried along by the buoyant narrative (often reminiscent of P.G. Wodehouse), with incongruous situations provoking amusement. The introduction sets the scene and the pace : a potentially dramatic scene is defused by nonplussed humour. Even the more technical passages, concerning aviation techniques and mechanics, are clear and never superfluous. There are, inevitably, some tragic events, but there is no pathos. One reads between the lines of the comment - "Two aircraft failed to return." From the start the author tells us he had "embraced the prevailing philosophy that life was short and in the meantime, anything went." Even if one is not familiar with the places and events described, it is informative as well as easy and entertaining to read. For the others, faded photos and recollections of wartime...
