This is the second edition (2015) of the family letters Wilhelmina "Minna" Boehm. These letters have been collected from various sources, then transcribed and augmented by family photographs by Hugh Hagius (my uncle, and Minna's great great grandson). This 2nd edition adds many new letters and photographs contributed by family members who were inspired by the first edition. Author Hugh Hagius is a philosopher and historian. He applies his deep knowledge of history to Minna's intimate and seemingly mundane letters. She writes about the weather, her ever expanding family of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. She kept the letters people wrote to her, about establishing some of the first communities of Germans in the United States during their great migration from Germany in the 19th century, when America was rapidly settling the midwest. They share stories of babies and mothers, the aches and pains of growing old, what it meant when a crop failed. All of this is set... More > on the great canvas of world events; the US Civil War, America's "Manifest Destiny" realized, railroads and riverboats, German immigrants (and others) uprooted from their homeland, only to face challenges and opportunities that they could not have imagined. The printed 2nd edition version is a nice addition to any book collection, with large glossy pages and plenty of photographs. The PDF version is free, and is invaluable to anyone working on their family history (I'm talking to you my many thousands of cousins). Thank you, uncle Hugh for compiling and writing this book. Thank you for introducing me to my German heritage. Wow. I, really had NO idea! And to my great great great grandmother Minna, sorry we missed each other. But thanks for keeping your letters.
