Ifor Hughes was born on the 16th May 1908 in the small Caernarvonshire town of Llanfairfechan. When he was in his eighties he decided to write this account of his early life, which he could remember with remarkable clarity.
These memoirs describe the village school in Llanfairfechan (where he was first forced to speak English) and then the Friars School in Bangor. Ifor then won a State Scholarship to Jesus College, Oxford in 1926 to read Mathematics.
He met and married his wife, Anna Betty Ambler, whilst teaching in Bradford (which is where these memoirs cease), but soon moved back to North Wales as an inspector of schools for Caernarvonshire.
He died on 10th November 1998 aged ninety.
