Vit D deficiency is often in the news: it is a major unrecognized health problem; raising 25 – hydroxy vitamin D levels above 30ng per ml would increase calcium transport in the gut, increase muscle strength, bone density, and above all, reduce the risk for cancer by 60%; as Vit D supplementation is good, its consumption should be raised to at least 1000 iu a day over and above the usual intake. All these and other claims have driven a vigorous campaign to make Vit D supplementation a part of public health policy. Is the advocacy sound? In this brilliantly written book, a senior cardiologist, Professor Davies, has critically looked at the claims and mercilessly exposed several false propositions (the only important manifestation of Vit D toxicity is hypercalcemia; extensive demonstration of the noxious effects of Vit D in the vascular system of experimental animal can be ignored; cancer risk increases with geographic latitude), errors in citations, and unproved claims (improving... More > calcium and Vit D nutritional status substantially reduces all cancer risk in post-menopausal women), which mark the advocacy for Vit D supplementation for the entire population. More disturbingly, Professor Davies has uncovered several instances of conflict of interest, where the authors of scientific papers are shown to have financial interest in Vit D industry. For too long, a credulous and anxious public has been fed on egregiously defective claims and hypotheses on the subject of Vit D deficiency, often disguised as evidence-based nutritional science. In this closely argued book, Professor Davies has done a service to physicians and the public by alerting them to the evidentiary weakness of the campaign for Vit D supplementation of diet, and the possible dangers therein. A concise and superbly well written critique of a topical issue in medical practice and nutritional advocacy. It puts the "Vitamin D lobby" in its proper perspective. This is an easy read for medical practitioners, nutritionists and all who are interested in health matters. Anyone headed for the vitamin section of their supermarket or drug store should read this booklet first. Dr. Val Lindquist

"VITAMIN D in DISARRAY"--A Healthy Prescription This beautifully conceived and organized monograph represents decades of research and careful critique of the popular notions concerning any real relationships between Vit D deficiency and disease. By creating a grossly elevated Vitamin D "normal level" below which the public is now being considered "deficient", a cottage industry has developed in Vitamin D supplementation. As a result, approximately 50 % of Americans are now being mischaracterized as having a disorder (Vitamin D deficiency) that according to Davies' analysis, is completely factitious. Dr.Hywel Davies is a highly regarded international cardiologist whose ideas need serious consideration. Any thoughtful and balanced reader should carefully re-evaluate the "popular" literature and proclamations of physicians about the "dangers" of Vitamin D deficiency. As a physician, here is my best prescription-- Take the money you would... More > have wasted on purchasing Vitamin D and buy a few copies of this paperback to educate your family and friends. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a copy for your personal physician who very likely is recommending Vitamin D every day falling prey to the fallacy that the deficiency is rampant and all manners of maladies will result---in this way, you will be doing a great service to a great number of people, educating one physician at a time, just as Dr. Davies has done for years.< Less
